What is Humanism?
Humanism is a rational philosophy informed by science, inspired by art, and motivated by compassion. Affirming the dignity of each human being, it supports maximum individual liberty and opportunity while practicing responsibility to society and planet Earth. It advocates democracy, human rights, and social justice. Free of supernaturalism, human beings are part of nature and their values -- religious, ethical, social, or political -- come from experience, culture, and human nature. Humanism derives the goals of life from human need and interest rather than theological or ideological abstractions, and asserts that humanity is responsible for its destiny.
Are You a Humanist?
>>We take responsibility for our lives and work for practical results in
this world rather than hope for divine intervention.
>>We find joy in the knowledge of society, the universe, and ourselves. We
enjoy beauty in music, art, literature, nature and science.
>>Evolution is a natural process common to all life on this planet as well
as in the universe. There is no divine intervention or an intelligent designer
to account for existence.
>>We strive to construct a rewarding life for all peoples and to pass on a
better world for succeeding generations.
>>We promote peaceful association based on common moral decencies-
integrity, honesty, respect, responsibility, and kindness. And, we value
reason, persuasion, and compromise when settling differences. Violence is the
least desired way of settling differences.
>>To force women to bear unwanted children is wrong; and sexual behavior
between consenting adults is solely their concern. Government has no right to
intervene.
>>We challenge discrimination and intolerance based on race, religion,
gender, sexual orientation, age, nationality, or class.
>>We work toward the ethical education of children. We want them to learn
the importance of rational thought, morality, and compassion.
>>We gratefully accept the benevolent teachings of all religions, but
stop short of belief in the supernatural and the religious intolerance that
has led to many wars. Humanist philosophy has powerfully benefited from
non-religious thinkers from the very beginning of written thought. But we
know we are not perfect; Humanism continues to evolve, seeking new insight
into human dilemmas.
>>In summary, we seek understanding in place of dogma, reason rather than
blind faith, hope rather than despair, calm acceptance in the face of
overwhelming adversity, self-acceptance rather than guilt, tolerance in place
of hatred, democracy rather than authoritarianism, equal opportunity rather
than quotas, love instead of hatred, and kindness toward others instead of
selfishness.
>>If you accept these values, come join us and be part of our movement.
